Our unique, beautiful quality silver jewellery is designed by Claire and we have recommendations on how to look after your semi-precious stone jewellery.

Jewelllery Care

silver jewellery with semi-precious stonesSterling Silver tarnishes over time if it is left unprotected and unpolished. To keep your silver looking new and shiny, the best result is achieved by using a silver polishing cloth impregnated with an anti-tarnsih agent. We do sell these if you wish to purchase one.

It is important that silver dip is not used as this will damage the semi-precious stones.

Your silver bracelets, necklaces, earrings, studs and rings should not be worn in the bath or shower. All silver gemstone jewellery should be removed before swimming.

Pearls, especially, will be completely ruined if they are dipped in silver dip. Some stones can be cleaned with warm soapy water but care should be taken as heat can cause the stone to fall out and some stones will be damaged by the soap. We therefore, recommend to firstly try a Q-tip with tepid water and no soap.

Tarnish is the reaction of silver to compounds of Sulphur in the air which create Silver Sulphide and causes the silver to go grey/black. If the silver is left in this condition for years, it may need to be professionally cleaned.

If silver jewellery is stored in a jewellery box it often tarnishes as most boxes are not completely air-tight.

We recommend that once the jewellery is clean it is stored in a cool, dry place and most importantly in an air-tight grip-seal plastic bag preventing it from reacting with the Sulphur in the air.

Each piece of jewellery is best kept in its own bag to prevent the stones scratching.

Perfume, hairspray, deodorant and some soaps and cleaning products will irreparably damage your semi-precious stone set jewellery. Jewellery should not be worn when cleaning, swimming or showering.

Silver can be ruined if perfume is sprayed directly onto it so we advise that perfume is applied before jewellery is put on.

Soaps and cleaning products will damage Turquoise and Lapis Lazuli stones in particular and therefore Turquoise rings and Lapis rings should always be removed before hand washing. Pearls will be damaged by all of the above chemicals, so extra care should be taken with them.

Soft stones such as Moonstone, Peridot, Garnet, Iolite, Amethyst, Citrine, Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise, Topaz (amongst others)should not be worn when undertaking a physical activity. These stones may also break if they are dropped.

As semi-precious stones are natural, some will fade if they are left in sunlight or heat. We, therefore, advise retailers not to leave a piece of gem-set jewellery in a window display or under hot lamps for too long. Two examples of stones affected by sunlight are Lapis Lazuli and Turquoise.

We recommend that you remove your silver necklaces and silver bracelets before sleeping to prevent damage.
